The results
Hours of legal work, done before anyone gets to the office.
80 hours → 30 min
One document task
A paralegal quoted 80 hours. A program I wrote in under 15 minutes did it in 30.
5–8 hours → ~2
Claims and defenses memo
Claude researches and drafts in an hour or two unattended. The lawyer's review and edits take about two hours.
Since late 2025
Running in production
Research, drafting, and document indexing, run overnight while the office is closed.
No set limit
Tasks per night
The AI paralegal runs as many tasks as needed. The only limit is the API budget.
Before, a first-draft complaint alone could take 1 to 3 hours of research and 1 to 5 hours of drafting, depending on the case.
The problem
Research and drafting piled up faster than the team could get to them.
Every project carried the same heavy lifting. Research took 4 to 6 hours. A first draft took anywhere from 3 to 15 hours, depending on complexity. Document review took 8 hours or more, depending on how many documents there were and how they had to be processed.
The firm wanted AI to take on that first pass, but any tool had to keep client information protected. Client files could not go into a tool that keeps the data.
What I built
How the AI paralegal works with Clio and Claude.
This is a Clio integration plus a set of Claude skills, each one a repeatable job the AI paralegal can run on its own.
- Clio, connected safely. Custom scripts connect Clio, the firm's practice management system, to a zero-data-retention Claude API, so the AI provider does not keep client data.
- Research from the task list. Skills pull from the firm's open tasks and research outstanding issues using Lexis and free legal research platforms.
- First drafts. Skills draft memos, pleadings, discovery, and motions from the research and the matter file.
- Documents, organized. Skills index client documents, build case chronologies, and handle large review jobs that used to take days.
- Ready by morning. The whole system runs overnight. Lawyers come in to a briefing of the day plus research libraries they can use to cross-check every draft.
The stack
Built on the tools the firm already trusts.
Clio
The firm's practice management system and the source of matters, tasks, and documents.
Claude API
Claude for lawyers, used through a zero-data-retention API setup instead of a consumer chat app.
Lexis and free research platforms
Where the AI legal research assistant finds and gathers authority.
Custom scripts
The glue that moves work between Clio and Claude and files the results.
How it stays trustworthy
The lawyer still does the lawyering.
- Every draft is a first draft. A lawyer cross-checks the facts and authority, then edits before anything is used.
- Research you can verify. Each draft comes with the research library behind it, so checking the AI's work is fast.
- Client data stays protected. Claude is reached through a zero-data-retention API, and the firm's records stay in its own Clio account.
- Practice details stay private. The firm and its practice area are not named here.
Good questions
Frequently asked questions.
What is an AI paralegal?
An AI paralegal is a set of AI automations that does the first pass of paralegal work: legal research, first drafts, document review and indexing, and case chronologies. In this litigation firm's build, the AI paralegal is connected to Clio and runs overnight, and a lawyer reviews and finishes everything it produces.
Can AI do paralegal work?
AI can do much of the first-pass paralegal work, such as gathering authority, drafting memos and pleadings, and reviewing large sets of documents. In this case study, an AI program finished a document task in 30 minutes that a paralegal had quoted at 80 hours. A lawyer still checks the facts and authority before anything is used.
Does an AI paralegal replace paralegals or lawyers?
No. At this litigation firm, the AI paralegal takes on the slow first pass of research, drafting, and document review. People still direct the work, verify every fact and citation, edit the drafts, and make every judgment call.
How does an AI paralegal work with Clio?
Custom scripts connect Clio, the firm's practice management system, to the Claude API. The AI paralegal pulls from the firm's open tasks, researches outstanding issues using Lexis and free legal research platforms, and drafts memos, pleadings, discovery, and motions, so the results are waiting for the lawyers in the morning.
Can a law firm use Claude AI without exposing client data?
This firm uses Claude through a zero-data-retention API setup, so the AI provider does not keep client data, and its matters and documents stay in the firm's own Clio account and files. That is a different arrangement from pasting files into a consumer chat app. Each firm decides whether a setup fits its own confidentiality obligations.
How much does an AI paralegal cost?
A custom AI paralegal's price depends on which tasks it runs and which tools it connects to, and its running cost is mainly Claude API usage, which grows with the number of tasks. Timebender starts every build with a $450, 90-minute consult that includes a written plan and a fixed-price quote.
